Field hockey falls to .500 after road loss to American University in Washington D.C.

September 7, 2014

Fresh off a victory Saturday afternoon, No. 16 field hockey (2-2 overall) was back at it Sunday as they took on No. 19 American in Washington D.C. After generating forty-seven shots in their previous two games, the offense was shut down today as they dropped a 1-0 contest in double overtime.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sierra Patton nearly willed her team to a victory, stopping all twelve shots until the Eagles finally scored on a penalty corner in the 98th minute. The twelve saves marker a new career high for Patton, as she continues to impress in her first year as a starter.

Senior forward Allie Ahern led the offensive attack for the Spartans, generating four shots on the game and getting three of them on net. Sophomore midfielder Megan Fenton and redshirt junior forward Claire Johnson registered the only other two shots on goal, leaving MSU with one of their more lackluster offensive performances this season.

AU’s Grace Wilson scored the game-winner late in double overtime. She led a balanced Eagle’s attack by directing five shots on Patton.

MSU gave up nine penalty corners in the game, compared to the four that they were awarded, and that might have made all the difference in this one. After Ahern received a green card in the 21st minute, senior midfielder Heather Howie was dealt a yellow card about midway through the second overtime period.

Head Coach Helen Knull will be busy this week, as MSU was trying to start the season playing up to the level that saw them make it to the Elite Eight last year. The Spartans are not far from it, as both losses have been to ranked opponents in overtime.

The team will return home this week as they try to regroup before heading on the road again next weekend. They will travel to Kent, Ohio to take on Kent St. on Saturday, and follow it up with a matchup against Richmond on Sunday.
