Initially mislabeled as another polar vortex assault, the lower temperatures result from a jet stream dipping further south than usual, bringing in cooler air typically experienced by Canada during this time of year, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Meteorologist Janis Laurens said.

"This type of pattern is more typical of something we would see in the fall," Laurens said. "This is unusual, but not completely unheard of."

Jazz Studies senior Walter Cano has been fighting the heat and humidity most the summer with fans and open windows. Cano said the lower-than-normal temperatures will provide a pleasant ceasefire in the summer battle.

"It's been way too hot and muggy — I welcome the cold," Cano said. "I have my fans going 24/7 recently, so it will be nice to give them a rest."

But for psychology sophomore Nicci Russell, the abnormal cold front represents another offense of undesirable Michigan weather.

"I like warm weather because I'm from the south," Russell said. "I didn't really want to come to Michigan for school because I don't like the weather. I wish it would be nice weather forever. That's my ideal life — sunshine and 70s and 80s."

According to National Weather Service forecasts, Tuesday and Wednesday will be mostly cloudy with less than a 50 percent chance of rain showers for both days.

Mostly sunny days in the mid-70s are forecasted for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
