Gymnastics splits meets over break despite high scores

The last two weekends were full of high scores for the MSU gymnastics team.

Senior night happened against Denver on Feb. 2 8 at Jenison Field House , where although the Spartans lost, they posted a season-high scor e of 195.550. Now-No. 20 Denver outscored them by 0.125 points , scoring a 195.675 .

Head coach Kathie Klage  told msuspartans.com t hat she is very proud of her team for finally competing how they have been practicing. They have been working on doing this all season.

Posting their highest vault score of the season, a 48.900,  junior Alina Cartwright  scored a 9.900 for the third straight meet and placed first on the event.

Senior Dani Levy l ived up to the expectations of senior night by posting a season-high of 9.800 and placing third.

Levy continued the meet with her career-best of 9.875, g etting first place on bars.

She was the only one to place on the podium on bars for the Spartans, but freshman Mackenzie Smith scored a 9.775   - her personal-best.

The Spartans tallied a 48.775 on bars, but Denver topped them with a 48.950.

MSU beat Denver in their final event - floor - 48.00-48.675.

Burt, Cartwright and freshman Elena Lagoski posted a score of 9.800, and all took second in the event.

On March 7, the team got its second highest score of the season and beat Southeast Missouri State, 194.900-193.625, for its first road win of the season.

Tallying a season-high score of 49.025 on bars - beating the Redhawks’ 48.800 - Levy and Burt tied for first place in the event with a score of 9.825 . Burt tied her season-best in the event.

Vault was the only event that the Redhawks topped the Spartans - who had two falls and counted one on the team score - by winning, 48.775-48.025 .

 Cartwright posted her first first-place win of the night with a 9.875.

Regardless of the two falls, Klages told msuspartans.com that she is proud that her team bounced back and fought through the mistakes to score a season-best of 49.050 on floor, beating Southeast Missouri’s 48.525 .

Lagoski finished first with her third 9.900 of her freshman year, followed by Levy’s second-place finish with a score of 9.875.

To end the meet, MSU beat Southeast Missouri 48.800-47.525, hitting all six routines on the balance beam. Cartwright won her second event of the night, posting a 9.800 .

Pace took second with a score of 9.775.

The Spartans took first and second place in the all-around competition - Cartwright in first with a 39.275 and Burt in second with a 38.900.
