Lee Reimer has caught the attention of Tom Anastos.

After the first of a two-game weekend series sweep against American International, the head hockey coach called his senior forward the “unsung hero” of the season so far.

“My definition at the time was someone who has given a lot and maybe not gotten the kind of attention they deserve,” Anastos said. “So far this season (Reimer) has been a pretty consistent performer. We’re trying to find the right spot for him and he’s trying to identify a niche in his game that if he wants to go on and play and be on Michigan State, he’s got to find that groove.”

Reimer netted his first goal of the season in the first game against AIC Friday night, and fired a team high nine shots at the net in the weekend finale on Sunday.

He is tied for third on the team with four points on the season.

While Reimer said it’s always nice to get on the score sheet, he knows the goals will come, and is much more focused on the little things and contributing where the team need him most.

“(Points) will come if you just play your game and just focus,” Reimer said. “We’re just trying to go out there, my line especially, we’re just trying to work hard and get pucks deep and win those one-on-one battles. We know if we play our game and work hard, we’ll have opportunities to score.”

Reimer anchors the first line with senior captain Greg Wolfe and sophomore forward Ryan Keller.

A season ago, Reimer had four goals and 13 assists in 36 games, and Wolfe had nine goals and 12 assists in 42 games.

Now, Wolfe has a team high five goals and an assist, while Reimer has a goal and three assists. Wolfe said the biggest contributor to the dynamic uptick in production has been communication.

“He knows where I am and I know where he is,” Wolfe said. “Me and Reimer didn’t have the offensive production that we wanted last season, so we talked about it and one thing we wanted was to get pucks to the net and keep it simple. That’s what we’re really committed to this year.”

Anastos said through the first five games of the season, Reimer is playing better than he has ever seen in his three years at the helm.

“Rather than focus on point productivity, he’s doing a good job of focusing on the little details of the game whether it’s bringing energy, be a good forechecker, being strong in the defensive zone, killing penalties,” Anastos said. “He’s good at faceoffs and he is producing some points.”

Focusing on the little things on both ends of the ice is something Reimer is used to. His favorite player is Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks because of his ability to both score and defend and how he leads by example.

Reimer also is getting finding his way onto both the penalty kill and power play, and is tied for the team lead in points in both categories.

Reimer said the role of unsung hero is one he’ll accept, and knows that in his final year in Green and White he and Wolfe will carry much of the load.

“I’m not trying to worry about points,” Reimer said. “It’s our last year, so we’re just putting it all on the line. (Anastos) expects a lot this year. We’re seniors, we’re older guys and he’s put a lot on our shoulders. We’re just trying to get it done for our team.”
