After a hot start to the season, the volleyball team is reeling.

With a loss to Indiana (9-12 overall, 1-9 Big Ten) in five sets (17-25, 25-18, 20-25, 25-21, 12-15) on Saturday night, the volleyball team (17-5, 6-4) has now lost four straight Big Ten matches after a 6-0 start to conference play.

The crispness and toughness the team exhibited before the streak has been a no-show. In the last four games, the Spartans have struggled with errors and mental mistakes that have made the art of winning easier for the competition.

“The way I look at it is we approached the first six games differently than we approached the last four games,” said head coach Cathy George. “We’ve got to get back to being on the attack and being more aggressive and assertive with the way we play the game, working together and being more decisive”

Senior outside hitter Lauren Wicinski had 16 kills on 48 attempts. Senior outside hitter Alexis Mathews had 11 kills and six blocks. Freshman outside hitter Chloe Reinig finished with 12 kills and three blocks.

In the first set, the Spartans continued to show why they were on a three-game slide — missed digs, sloppy set ups and momentum-killing errors. Indiana won the first set, 25-17 and hit at an 84% clip.

Indiana started off strong, scoring the first five points of the match. Freshman middle blocker Autumn Christenson broke the run with a kill, but Indiana continued to run up the score.

MSU never got within six points, as the Hoosiers cruised to a 25-17 set one victory.

The Spartans rebounded to take the second set, 25-18. Unlike the first set, MSU had control of the second from beginning to end.

Reinig scored the first kill for MSU, and Wicinski later had back-to-back service aces to give the Spartans an 8-3 lead.

Indiana had seven errors in the first set, which was a big help for MSU as they cruised to a 21-12 lead. Indiana outscored MSU down the stretch by a 6-4 margin, but it was too late as the Spartans took set two, 25-18.

Set three was close, with 11 ties and five lead changes. However, it was Indiana that came out on tip with a 25-20 win.

The teams went point-for-point early on, but Indiana broke a 9-9 tie with a 4-1 to take a 13-9 lead. MSU got within 14-15, and eventually tied the game at 18-18, and then at 20-20. But Indiana would go on to score the last five points of the match to win set three, 25-20.

MSU bounced back to win the fourth set, 25-21. Similar to set three, it was close with 11 ties and six lead changes.

The Spartans took an early 5-2 lead, but Indiana quickly came back to tie it, 5-5. The teams traded blows until Indiana took a 21-19 lead late in the fourth. But the Spartans outscored the Hoosiers 6-2 for a comeback win.

Indiana eventually closed out the match with a 15-12 win in set five. The Hoosiers took an early lead, but MSU came back to tie.

Both teams went back and forth, but Indiana outscored the Spartans 5-2 after a 10-10 tie to complete the upset.

Senior setter Kristen Kelsay appeared hurt in the fifth set, and played a few more minutes before junior defensive specialist Ryian Hubbard subbed her out.

George didn’t provide an update on Kelsay’s status.
