MSU women’s field hockey walked away from Tuesday’s game against Central Michigan with a 1-0 victory. Coming off of a 4-3 loss to No. 5 Penn State, the win boosted team morale and put the Spartans at .500 on the season.
“It wasn’t our best game by any means, (but) we pulled through and got the win,” Howie said. “We’re back at .500 which is where we want to be, we just need to go up from here. Obviously Penn State was a tough loss, but we’re looking on to our next Big Ten game against Northwestern.”
The Spartan’s first and only goal was scored by junior forward Abby Barker late in the second half with an assist going to junior forward Heather Howie.
Even head coach Helen Knull said though it counts as a win, it still was an underwhelming game.
“Today was not our best hockey, but we got the win which was the good part of it” Knull said. “Seventeen shots and seven corners and one goal — we’re not finishing. Coming off Saturday and doing a midweek, it’s tough to get up again, but it’s what we have to do and we need to prepare better for that in the future.”
The Spartans now are beginning preparation for their next Big Ten conference and home game this Saturday against Northwestern, starting at 1 p.m.
“Today we had a quick turnaround from Penn State, so we were all a little tired,” Barker said. “We came off our loss from Penn State, so today we were definitely looking to get a victory and we did. That gives us confidence going into Saturday.”
