Women's soccer beats Dayton on road, 2-1

September 1, 2013

The MSU women’s soccer team won its first road game of the season Sunday afternoon against Dayton, 2-1.

Sophomore forward Allyson Krause put the Spartans (3-0-1) on the board first in the 19th minute with her second goal of the season.

In the second half, it was redshirt freshman forward Erica Goodenough who found the back of the net for MSU on an assist from junior midfielder Megan Marsack.

Head coach Tom Saxton said his team needed to muster all of their effort for Sunday’s match against the Flyers (2-2-0) after a double-overtime tie against No. 21 San Diego State.

“(I’m) very happy, they really gutted it out,” Saxton said. “They were still pretty sore, but we used a lot of players, which has been a theme of ours.”

The Flyers’ lone goal came in the 80’ when midfielder Ashley Campbell scored to break the shutout.

Although it’s still early in the season, Saxton is very glad to see all of his players step up to help out.

This season, the Spartans return just six upperclassmen to the field, which is the fewest amount of juniors and seniors since 1988.

“Most noteworthy is that we’ve gotten contributions from all over the field (this season),” Saxton said.

MSU also has had to deal with a couple key injuries to the starting line. In the first game of the season last weekend, junior forward Paige Wester went down with a leg injury against Buffalo, which was followed by another leg injury to junior forward/midfielder Lisa Vogel during the Spartans’ win against Milwaukee.

Both players are expected to miss a couple weeks, Saxton said.

The Spartans’ next game will be Thursday evening at DeMartin Stadium at Old College Field where they will face Oakland (1-3-0).
