“Having the room filled with first responders was very touching,” Rep. Theresa Abed, D-Grand Ledge, said after the service. “9/11 was something so tragic, but it was something that brought everyone together. The ceremony today was truly inspiring.”

The service began with an opening speech by Rep. Bruce Rendon, R-Lake City, followed by the color guard, which included members of the East Lansing Fire Department Honor Guard, the Lansing Fire Fighters Local 421 Honor Guard and the Lansing Police Department Honor Guard.

The room fell silent as a moment was dedicated in memory of fallen heroes on Sept. 11, 2001. House Speaker Jase Bolger spoke to recognize those who died, as well as Michigan responders for the work they undergo to protect their communities and the country from danger.

“We stop to remember and mourn the innocent lives lost at the World Trade Center 12 years ago,” Bolger said. “However, it is also time to remember those here in our state who are always on call when we need them and who never shy from danger to serve the men and women of Michigan.”

Various members read the names of Michigan first responders and members of the military that lost their lives in 2012 and 2013. The first responders standing on the floor of the chamber were then greeted with an appreciative applause.

Bolger said whether it is Sept. 11 or any other day of the year; they deserve our honor, our respect and our appreciation.

Rep. Tom Leonard, R-Dewitt Township, also was adamant about being appreciative of the work first responders do for our country on a daily basis.

“We should never forget to thank them—In the grocery store, on the street,” Leonard said. “We should always recognize them for their incredible service.”
