Matthew Pizzo mpizzo@statenews.com THE STATE NEWS In-state rivals Michigan State and Michigan broke out the clubs for some friendly, competitive fun at the Country Club of Lansing for the third annual Big Ten Athletic Director Golf Challenge. MSU captured the trophy for the third-straight year, beating UM 6.5-2.5. The challenge pits universities' athletic directors, professors, members of school radio crews, men’s and women’s golf coaches and four former student-athletes together for nine matches. Pairings: Mark Hollis vs. Dave Brandon (Athletics directors) Trey Rogers vs. Thad Polk (Faculty) Matt Steigenga vs. Frank Beckmann (Media) Casey Lubahn vs. Chris Whitten (Men’s golf coaches) Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll vs. Jan Dowling (Women’s golf coaches) Laura Kueny vs. Ashley Bauer (Former women’s golf student-athlete) Caroline Powers vs. Brianna Broderick (Former women’s golf student-athletes) Nathan Clark vs. Justin Hicks (Former men’s golf student-athletes) Ryan Brehm vs. Matt Thompson (Former men’s golf student-athletes) MSU athletics director, Mark Hollis, birdied on the 18th hole to force the match against Dave Brandon to sudden death with a clutch putt. Hollis went on to win the match with a par on the 19th hole. Trey Rogers, professor of turfgrass management, defeated Thad Polk, 3&1. Men's golf coach Casey Lubahn won his match against Chris Whitten, 6&5. MSU clinched the match following women's golf coach Stacey Slobodnick-Stoll's defeat of Jan Dowling, 3&2. Former MSU golfer Laura Kueny, who earned Big Ten Golfer of the Year honors in 2009-10, won her match against Ashley Bauer, 6&5. MSU senior Caroline Powers is one of the most decorated golfers in MSU history, owning a 74.39 career average through her junior season. She won her match against Brianna Broderick, 2&1.
