Amaka Agugua replaces Tempie Brown as women's basketball assistant coach

July 1, 2013

MSU women’s basketball head coach Suzy Merchant announced Monday that Amaka ‘Mox’ Agugua will be joining the Spartan women’s basketball coaching staff as an assistant coach.

Agugua will be replacing Tempie Brown, who was hired as an assistant coach at Stanford University on June 25.

The former Old Dominion University assistant coach and recruiting coordinator will now assist with the Spartan post players, while also acting as a key component in recruiting and opponent scouting.

In her two seasons at ODU, the Monarchs improved from 11-21 in the 2011-12 season to 19-12 and a WNIT berth in the 2012-13 season.

Agugua also took on the role as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Indiana University from 2009-2011. She served as a graduate assistant from 2006-07 and an assistant coach from 2007-2009 at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Agugua earned her bachelor’s degree in business management from Hofstra University and her master’s degree in sport leadership and administration at VCU’s SportsCenter.

At Hofstra, Agugua was a four-year letterwinner and a three-year captain. She owns three of the top-five single-season field goal percentage marks. Also in her time at Hofstra, she was a second-team All-CAA selection in the 2003-04 season and helped the team to its first postseason WNIT berth in the 2005-06 season. She ended her career at Hofstra 12th on the career rebounding list with 568 rebounds.
