The MSU track and field team got its outdoor season off to a strong start at the Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State this weekend.
Senior thrower Lonnie Pugh placed second overall in the men’s discus event with a throw of 53.09 meters.Teammates Antonio James, a sophomore, and redshirt freshman Connor Kostrzewa placed 11th and 20th,respectively. Pugh also was the runner-up in the hammer throw Saturday.
In the 5,000-meter, redshirt freshman Caleb Rhynard was MSU’s top finisher at 10th place with a time of 13:57.99. Also securing top-10 finishes was an MSU women’s relay team in the 4-x-400, securing eighth.
Senior James Nixon’s pole vault of 4.85 meters was good enough for fourth place in the event, while sophomore Owen Hughes and senior Kevin Jackson finished seventh and eighth overall in the high jump.
On Saturday, two Spartans nabbed top-10 finishes in the 800-meter run as sophomore Austin Wissler’s career-best time of 1:50.26 earned him sixth place and senior Joe Banyai finished ninth with his time of 1:51.02.
Three Spartans placed in the top-20 of the women’s 400-meter run led by sophomore Tori Franklin’s fourth place time of 54.75, who also ran the event for the first time in college. Fellow sophomore Alicia Evans ran a time of 55.53, which earned her an 11th place finish while senior Alysson Bodenbach finished 17th in the event with her time of 55.99.
Franklin’s mark of 13.07 meters in the triple jump was a new personal-best for her in outdoor competition and good enough for first place in the event.
Former All-American thrower senior Beth Rohl had an strong start to her outdoor season, winning the discus throw with a mark of 52.53 meters and taking second place in the hammer throw with a 60.12-meter heave.
Sophomore Jaelynn Pryor won the 400-meter hurdles with her time of 59.45 while junior Amanda Impellizzerifinished third in the pole vault with a mark of 3.85 meters.
MSU had three sprinters among the top-20 in the women’s 200-meter dash led by Evans’ fifth-place time of 24.51. Sophomores TeJuanna Williams and Jellisa Westney finished eighth and 16th overall, respectively.
The women’s relay teams also had a productive weekend as the 4-x-1,500-meter relay team placed third, and the 4-x-100-meter relay team finished fourth.
