A new judge will oversee court rulings on whether an Okemos resident stabbed an MSU student to death last month after the former judge took himself off the case today because of a prior relationship with the reported assailant’s family.
Connor McCowan, 18, was arraigned Feb. 25 in the 55th District Court in Mason for reportedly fatally stabbing nutritional sciences senior Andrew Singler on Feb. 23.
McCowan’s lawyer, Chris Bergstrom, said Judge Thomas Boyd admitted during today’s pre-trial hearing that he knows the McCowan family from when his son played sports with McCowan a number of years ago.
Judge Donald Allen is taking over the case. The first hearing under Allen is scheduled for April 16.
The preliminary examination, which will determine whether there is enough reason to believe McCowan stabbed Singler to take the case to a full trial, is scheduled for April 18.
