The North American Indigenous Student Organization, or NAISO, expects to draw thousands for the Native American culture event at the “Powwow of Love” starting at 10 a.m. Saturday at Jenison Field House.

The 30th annual powwow will have dancers, drummers, food and other events related to American Indian culture. ASMSU, MSU’s undergraduate student government helped fund the event.

Kinesiology junior Jessica Rivard, public relations officer for NAISO and vender chair for the powwow committee, said this is the biggest student-run event of the year on campus.

“This is a big gathering so that everyone can come together and learn something new about Native Americans,” Rivard said.

“The powwow is a unique experience offered to students that they can’t find elsewhere in the area.”
The best time for students to come would be around 1 p.m. when NAISO will host its big kickoff. In past years, between 2,000 and 5,000 people have attended the event, Rivard said.

“You will be able to hear all the things going on inside of Jenison so it attracts students to come in,” Rivard said.

“This is a big celebration of Native American cultures, and students don’t have the opportunity to go to powwows often.”
