The MSU women’s swimming and diving team finished in 11th place at the Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis last weekend.
“It’s just really a very deep meet,” head coach Matt Gianiodis said. “It’s difficult to score points, but from a performance standpoint we did really well.”
Career-best marks fell left and right.
Senior Lauren Baisden set a new career mark with 1:59.90 in the 200-meter backstroke, junior Summer Strickler swam the 100-meter freestyle in a personal-best time of 50.33 seconds, and senior Jenny Rusch and junior Brooke Telander each swam personal bests in the 100-meter freestyle, swimming 50.47 and 51.97 respectively.
No swimmers made it to the NCAA Regionals, but a pair of Spartan divers did.
Sophomore Alison Menzies scored 257.6 on the 1-meter board and 276.45 on the 3-meter board, and junior Cristee Cordes got 257.55 on the 1-meter board and 262.05 on the 3-meter board.
“I thought they did well,” diving coach Eric Best said. “We could’ve done better in certain places, but the nice thing was that they were nice and consistent, and they both finished considerably higher than they did in the last Big Tens.”
Best said neither expected to get this far and it will be good experience for them moving forward.
“They put themselves in a good position to make it to the finals next year,” he said.
