Former dean dies in Arizona Home

February 7, 2013

“The Source” was just one of many names for Philip Greenman, a senior associate dean emeritus of the College of Osteopathic Medicine who spent more than 25 years at MSU and died Feb. 5 in his home in Tucson, Ariz., of cardiac failure brought on by pneumonia, a department official said.

Arrangements are underway, and a service will be held at his Arizona home.

Besides being “The Source,” on manipulative medicine, Greenman also was known as a world-renowned physician, a titan in the profession and a friend, associate professor and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine chairperson Lisa DeStefano said.

College spokeswoman Pat Grauer said people traveled across the world to be treated by Greenman, and he brought the prominence to the program.

“It is the most respected manual medicine series in the country because of him,”DeStefano said.

An endowment named after him already is in place, Grauer said. Greenman also wrote “Principles of Manual Medicine,” and donated about $2 million to the college.

“We have lost, first of all, a friend,” Grauer said. “We have lost one of the most highly-respected people ever to be part of the osteopathic profession.

“We have lost a scholar, an advocate and, for this college, we’ve lost a lot.”
