February 24, 2013

The MSU gymnastics team received a season-high score of 196.0 as they lost to Penn State Saturday night.

“This is the team I have been seeing in the gym all along,” head coach Kathie Klages said in a release. “I am thrilled we were able to take it to the competition floor tonight. I am extremely proud of the fight in this group. This team showed what they are made of tonight.”

Senior Tiara Neal scored 9.9 on vault to win the discipline. Sophomore Alina Cartwright tied for third with a 9.825.

Uneven bars saw high scores as Penn State’s Madison Merriam and Sharaya Musser took first and second with 9.95 and 9.925, respectively. Freshman Lisa Burt finished third with a 9.9.

Burt also tied for first on beam with a career-high score of 9.925.

Sophomore Ashley Noll and junior Dani Levy each got 9.85 on floor to tie for second, just 0.025 behind the winner.

In the all-around competition, Burt finished second with a season-high mark of 39.325, and Cartwright tied her career-high for the second straight week with 39.075, good enough for third.

The Spartans take on in-state rival Michigan in the final home meet of the season at 4 p.m. Saturday at Jenison Field House.
