In its first Big Ten Tournament matchup, MSU men’s soccer (9-9-1 overall, 3-3-0 Big Ten) earned an advance to the second round with a 2-1 win over Indiana.
The No. 5-seed Spartans handed the No.4 Hoosiers their first quarterfinal loss of the Big Ten Tournament, with an MSU goal coming in the first and second half.
Sophomore forward Adam Montague picked up the game’s first goal less than five minutes into the game on assists from freshman midfielder Sean Conerty and senior midfielder Nick Wilson.
Sophomore forward Ryan Keener followed suit in the second half, putting the ball away following a scramble after a corner kick.
The Hoosiers got one past freshman goalie Zach Bennett with less than 10 minutes left, but the Spartans held them off for the remainder of the game.
Wednesday’s game is the second time MSU has beaten Indiana this season. The first game took place on Oct. 28, when freshman midfielder Jay Chapman netted three goals and led the Spartans to a 3-1 victory.
MSU will take on No. 1-seed Penn State Friday at noon, Central time in Evanston, Ill.
