Landon Hall renovation designs presented at RHA meeting

November 14, 2012

Changes will be coming to Landon Hall within the next two years with newly proposed renovation designs.

Design proposals for Landon Hall’s living and dining hall renovations were presented at Wednesday’s Residential Halls Association, or RHA, General Assembly meeting.

The renovations will begin in May 2013 after students have moved off campus and are estimated to be finished by August 2014.

Paul Mason, associate director of facilities at MSU, said the main goal of the Landon’s redesign is to improve the food service of the hall and the quality of the dorm.

“We want to bring the building up to code … we want to make it accessible,” Mason said. “(We have to) make sure the fire protection systems throughout the building, including the student rooms, … meet all the fire safety codes that are needed.”

Mason said as part of the redesign, there will be heated walkways outside the buildings to melt snow or ice, so the parking and entrance areas will be fully accessible.

Landon Hall also will be adding five practice music rooms in the basement of the hall.

Associate Director of Residential Dining Bruce Haskell said compensation will be given to students living in West Circle who are inconvenienced by the renovations.

“We will give them an extra combo exchange,” he said. “I’m guaranteeing it.”

Haskell said although the final design will be different, conceptually the current design is similar to what the finished product will be.

He said the redesign will make the dining area similar to Snyder and Phillips halls and Brody Complex Neighborhood but there could be additional types of food and styles of service to ensure the dining hall will be “unique in a certain way.”

RHA President Kelcey Gapske said she thinks the designs presented at the meeting were beautiful.

“The renovations in Landon (Hall) needed to happen, but I’m really excited that they’re keeping a lot of the structural integrity of the building,” Gapske said. “It’s much needed renovations for sure.”

Gapske said she’s also excited that Landon Hall will become more accessible and the possibility of hosting future RHA meetings in West Circle.
