For the 2012 presidential election, 29,061 voters registered in East Lansing, according to the city of East Lansing website.

Of the registered total, 14,402 voters came to the polls, which was 50 percent of the registered voters.

East Lansing City Clerk Marie McKenna said a large amount of voters Tuesday has left the office “swamped.”

“(We had) 10 people answering phones, things breaking down (and) students not knowing precincts,” McKenna said.

At most of the locations, 50 percent of registered voters showed up.

At Precinct 13 in Abbot Hall, 891 people voted, which was 52 percent of the 1,719 voters registered at this location, according to the city of East Lansing’s website.

At Precinct 1 in Brody Hall, 702 people voted, which was 45 percent of the 1,578 voters registered at this location.

At Precinct 7 in St. Paul Lutheran Church, 3383 E. Lake Lansing Road, 758 people voted, which was 49 percent of the 1,550 registered there.

McKenna said Precinct 1 and 7 were two of the largest precincts in East Lansing.

Precinct 17 in Shaarey Zedek Congregation, 1924 Coolidge Road, had the highest percentage of registered voters come to the polls — 69 percent of the 1,049 registered people voting.

McKenna said she is proud of East Lansing’s turnout to the polls Tuesday.

She said the growth in voters might be attributed to an increase in the emphasis on voting and preventing voter suppression.

“We’re out there to help the voter and there’s a lot of awareness about the issues,” McKenna said. “People are starting to realize what an important duty of (the) city this is.”
