For the first time since week two, the MSU football team (4-2 overall, 1-1 Big Ten) heads into the locker room with a halftime lead, up 10-3 on the visiting Hawkeyes (3-2, 1-0).
After an interception by junior linebacker Denicos Allen gave MSU the ball on Iowa’s 26-yard line, junior running back Le’Veon Bell got the call three times in a row before taking it in for a 14-yard touchdown, giving the Spartans a 7-0 lead.
Both teams managed to put three more points on the board as senior kicker Dan Conroy drilled a 24-yard field goal and Iowa’s Mike Meyer responded with a 23-yarder.
MSU’s defense held the Hawkeye rushing attack to 12 yards on the ground, while Bell rushed 16 times for 63 yards and a score for MSU. Junior quarterback Andrew Maxwell completed 6-of-10 passes for 101 yards, including a 38-yard pass to freshman wideout Aaron Burbridge.
Near the end of the first half, MSU squandered a scoring opportunity, driving to midfield before miscommunication at the line allowed the clock to run out.
When the game resumes in the second half, MSU will receive the ball and defend the north endzone.
