On a budget: Finding activities for a rainy day

June 20, 2012

The more the rain falls, the more difficult it can be to muster up the courage to go outside.
When the weather takes a turn for the worse, sometimes spending some time inside is the only logical option.

But being cooped up indoors all day can be boring. Next time the weather has you hiding out in your house, keep yourself occupied with these inexpensive yet entertaining activities.

Creative crafts
Don’t let the dreary weather get you down too much. Brighten up your rainy day and your living space by crafting a colorful and creative work of art.

Take advantage of any old magazines or photographs you have stashed away in your room by cutting them up and making a collage to hang on your wall.

Or, if you don’t have any materials or don’t like collaging, try your hand at a more traditional art form.

Gather up some painting supplies and cover a canvas with brightly colored designs or patterns. Don’t worry if you don’t have any at home because there are plenty of craft stores in the area in which you can purchase some, such as Hobby Lobby, 2775 E. Grand River Ave., and Michaels, 540 Frandor Ave., in Lansing.

Catching up
A day when the unpleasant weather has you stuck inside is the perfect opportunity to get caught up on just about anything in which you’ve fallen behind.

Since soaking up the sun while poolside or at the beach with friends isn’t an option, take this time to get your mundane but necessary tasks out of the way.

If you’re taking summer classes and have a test coming up or a homework assignment that needs finishing, head to the Main Library or one of your favorite study spots and get to work.

Getting caught up doesn’t always have to be a bore though. Call a friend or family member you haven’t spoken to in a while and get brought up to speed on their life.

If you have a favorite TV show or a few movies you haven’t seen in a while, have a marathon and escape from the gloomy weather for a couple hours.

Organized spaces
Organizing one’s living space might not be as enjoyable as decorating it, but it is a less expensive and more productive activity to partake in.

The last thing many students want to do during the summertime is spend a day inside cleaning their bedroom. But with the rain keeping everyone from participating in outdoor activities for a while, you might as well take the time to get some work done so you can enjoy yourself once the sun comes back out.

Straighten up your closet and get rid of clothes you no longer wear. You can make money off this activity by selling your unwanted items to a consignment shop, such as Plato’s Closet, 2843 E. Grand River Ave.

Go through the rest of your room and search for other items you have no use for. Give them away to friends or donate them to your local thrift store, such as The Salvation Army, 3800 W. Saginaw St., in Lansing.
