MSU football players junior defensive end William Gholston and redshirt-freshman linebacker Lawrence Thomas did not sustain any major injuries after being involved in a rollover accident on eastbound Interstate-96 near Spencer Road in Brighton Township at about 3:40 p.m. Wednesday.

According to Sgt. Mark Thompson of the Brighton post of the Michigan State Police, everyone involved with the accident — including Gholston and Thomas — was wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident.

“They were all doing the right thing,” Thompson said. “(They) probably saved themselves from being injured even more.”

Gholston and Thomas were driving a maroon 1999 Chevrolet SUV in the center lane when an unknown vehicle cut off a 2010 Hyundai sedan driven by a 28-year old woman in the left lane. The driver of the Hyundai swerved out of the way to avoid the unknown vehicle, causing her to lose control of the vehicle and cross into Gholston’s path when the vehicles collided.

Both vehicles left the roadway and rolled over, but none of the vehicle’s occupants were seriously injured. All those involved sought their own medical treatment.

No tickets or citations were issued because Thompson said the driver of the unknown vehicle would have been at fault for the accident. However, the police do not have enough information to investigate the unknown driver, he said.

A statement released by the MSU athletics department said the two Spartans were “shaken,” but otherwise okay.

“The police responded within minutes of the accident, and thankfully, no one was seriously injured,” the statement said.

Trooper Greg Galarneau was the responding officer to the scene, but has not respond to a message left for him by The State News.

In 2011, Gholston led the Spartan defensive line in tackles with 70, and was named second-team All-Big Ten by both the coaches and media. Thomas redshirted last year and missed Saturday’s spring game with a shoulder injury that kept him sidelined throughout MSU’s 15 spring practices.
