East Lansing traffic may see some disruptions when a pair of construction projects in the city begins Monday.
A reconstruction project along Harrison Ave. between Mt. Hope Road and Trowbridge Road is expected to continue through June 27 and portions of Albert Ave. and Grove St. will close and reopen periodically over the summer as upgraded sewer and water utilities are installed below Albert Ave.
Ron Lacasse, a senior engineer with the East Lansing Department of Public Works said the improvements to the sewer and water systems were necessary due to an upcoming redevelopment project in the Ann Street plaza.
“As more development has come in, we’ve decided to upgrade those facilities to better serve the area, but also to anticipate future development as it comes in,” Lacasse said. “We’re looking to plan for the future and sort of over-serve the area so we’re not upgrading again in five to 10 years.”
The project will begin at the intersection of Albert Ave. and Charles Street, and move westward. Construction will be completed in 12 phases, with each block being completed and reopened so no more than one or one and a half blocks will be closed at the same time.
Lacasse said the construction along Harrison Ave. will heavily impact traffic to the area, as the segment will be closed to through traffic. Local traffic that needs to get to the area will have to do so through Mt. Hope only, while CATA bus routes also will be affected.
“We’ve been working with them on the re-routing and making sure the turning movements they need are available and that sort of thing,” Lacasse said.
Both projects will include replacements to the streets, curbs and sidewalks that are being affected in addition to the sewer work being completed below street level.
