Softball ends losing streak, defeats Central Michigan 6-1

April 4, 2012

The MSU softball team was able to snap a seven-game losing streak when it knocked off the Central Michigan Chippewas 6-1 at Varsity Softball Field in Mount Pleasant, Mich.

Leading 1-0 heading into the top of the seventh inning, the Spartans (11-23 overall, 0-6 Big Ten) blew the lead open on a five-run rally kick-started by a single from junior outfielder Kylene Hopkins that drove in a pair of runs. Hopkins finished the day batting 2-for-3 with three runs batted in.

On the other side of the plate, sophomore pitcher Cassee Layne threw a complete game, allowing five hits and recording five strikeouts. Defensively, the Spartans avoided committing a single error, continuing their strong fielding performance during the previous weekend.

MSU will return to action Friday at 2 p.m. when it heads to University Park, Penn. to take on Penn State in the first of a three-game weekend series.
