Clipfell named Western Michigan head coach

April 15, 2012

MSU women’s basketball associate head coach Shane Clipfell was named Western Michigan’s head coach, the Broncos’ athletics department announced Friday.

“I am humbled, excited and very proud to be the newest addition to the Western Michigan University athletic department and the campus community,” Clipfell said in a statement from the MSU athletics department.

Clipfell scouted the MSU opponents and helped implement the Spartans’ game plans along with two other assistants. He also coordinated all of MSU’s recruiting efforts, which included organizing official, unofficial, off-campus and home visits.

MSU head coach Suzy Merchant and Clipfell have been coaching together for the last 14 years and Clipfell has been on Merchant’s coaching staff for five years.

“I am thrilled for Shane’s opportunity at Western Michigan University,” said Merchant in a statement from the MSU athletics department.

“It has always been his dream job, and he is a perfect fit as a Bronco. I have enjoyed 14 tremendous years with Shane. He’s dedicated, hardworking, competent, passionate and extremely loyal, and he has taught me so much about the game of basketball and life.”
