Baseball knocks off Chippewas, 11-1

April 18, 2012

Another day, another strong offensive performance by the MSU baseball team.

Following a 20-10 rout of Indiana on Sunday and a 13-3 thrashing of Western Michigan on Tuesday, the Spartans (24-12 overall, 5-4 Big Ten) put together a third consecutive offensive showcase against Central Michigan.

Led by a four-hit, three-RBI day by freshman first baseman Ryan Krill, the Spartans defeated Central Michigan 11-1 on Wednesday at Theunissen Stadium in Mount Pleasant, Mich.

With a rebound performance in mind after being shelled by Michigan last weekend, sophomore pitcher Mike Theodore rose to the occasion against the Chippewas. The transfer from Tennessee pitched 6.3 innings, surrendering five hits and one run to improve his record on the season to 3-1.

The Spartans jumped ahead in the second inning after senior shortstop Justin Scanlon and freshman designated hitter Blaise Salter reached base by way of a fielding error and a hit-by-pitch, respectively. Both Scanlon and Salter came around to score after sophomore catcher Joel Fisher reached base on an errant throw by Central Michigan third baseman Tyler Hall.

MSU added three more runs in the fourth inning, largely on the two-out offensive attack that allowed the Spartans to increase the lead to 5-1.

After adding another in the sixth, the Spartans tacked on five runs to close out the game in the ninth inning to cap an impressive offensive performance.

The Spartans return home this weekend to open up a three-game series with Minnesota, starting at 3:05 p.m. Friday at McLane Baseball Stadium at Old College Field.
