ASMSU passes 2012-13 budget

April 19, 2012

ASMSU, MSU’s undergraduate student government, passed its final budget for the 2012-13 fiscal year at its Thursday night meeting, after discussing final changes to allocations last week.

The budget, which totals about $1.52 million, is a slight increase from last year’s budget, based on expected university enrollment.

The group’s general fund, totaled at about $65,000, saw an increase of almost $50,000 from unused rollover funds, which can be used for special groups decided on by the group.

The assembly also passed a bill to secure funding for June 2012, which is not included in next year’s budget. When ASMSU moved its accounts back into MSU’s financial system in March, it needed to adjust to the university’s fiscal year, which begins July 1, ASMSU General Assembly Chairman Steve Marino said. ASMSU’s budget previously operated on a fiscal year that began June 1.

The extra month totals about $57,000 for labor and supplies during June.

Also during the meeting, the assembly recognized former East Lansing Mayor and former ASMSU member Sam Singh for his work within ASMSU and in other leadership roles.

ASMSU Alumni Association board members Kara Spencer and Kyle Dysarz presented Singh with the ASMSU Alumni Lifetime of Leadership Award for work he has done with the student body and local legislative bodies.

Singh said he was honored to receive the award and said being part of ASMSU was an experience that shaped who he is today.
