Steering Committee discusses upcoming festivities

March 13, 2012

MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon discussed preparations for handling campus celebrations throughout the duration of the men’s basketball team’s NCAA Tournament run at Tuesday’s Steering Committee meeting.

The Spartans’ first game is Friday against LIU Brooklyn in Columbus, Ohio.

The university is working with the MSU Celebrations Committee to create plans and awareness to ensure students celebrate appropriately and “bring pride to East Lansing,” Simon said. She said the upcoming weekend will be a particular challenge with the combination of tournament games and St. Patrick’s Day festivities.

Also at the meeting, recommendations for changes to the Code of Teaching Responsibility regarding the proctoring of exams were set to be discussed at the next University Council meeting. Some of the recommendations are to increase security measures when proctoring exams for online classes.

The recommendations from the University Committee on Undergraduate Studies include when proctoring or other security measures are required in a course, the measures should be administered consistently with its design and delivery.

The committee also discussed a proposal to make the deadline to drop a course the same date as the deadline to withdraw from the university.

Currently those deadlines are on two separate dates, and the committee requested the recommendations be distributed to other groups within academic governance.
