With less than four hours left before polls in 17 voting precincts across East Lansing are scheduled to close, voter turnout has been mixed, with campus locations seeing smaller numbers compared to residential polls with higher turnouts.
About 1,500 votes out of about 25,772 registered voters in the city had been reported as of noon between East Lansing’s precincts.
East Lansing residents and MSU students are voting today with a $53 million bond proposal regarding the East Lansing school system on the table.
The proposal would renovate and reconfigure five of the city’s six elementary schools.
Assistant City Manager and City Clerk Marie McKenna said overall, turnout is higher than officials expected, but campus voting has been slower than residential polling locations.
Joann Hubbard, a polling official at Brody Hall, the voting site for precinct 1, said about 26 people — 25 MSU students and one residence hall adviser — had voted as of about 2:45 p.m., a turnout on par with past years.
Within the first three hours polls in Brody Hall were open, only two people voted, she said.
Hubbard said voting among students generally is higher during fall presidential elections, with as many as 1,200 students voting at a given precinct.
Outside Brody Hall, East Lansing resident Tara Harrison handed out green campaign flyers encouraging people to vote against the proposal.
The flyer said the bond proposal gives little consideration to serving the children of MSU students.
“We’re seeing a lot of student interest,” Harrison said. “A lot of students may not have been aware (of this issue).”
McKenna said she had received several complaints regarding improper campaigning too close to polling locations earlier in the day.
There was one complaint at an on-campus location, she said.
Campaigning cannot take place within 100 feet of polling location entrances, McKenna said.
Those complaints have since been resolved, she said.
Polls in East Lansing close tonight at 8 p.m.
