Alliance of Queer and Ally Students create blog

February 14, 2012

Communication senior Abby Rudnicki has always cared about rights for the lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender, or LBGT, community.

“I don’t think anyone should ever be told who to love and how to live,” she said.

Rudnicki is one of six writers for the Alliance of Queer and Ally Students’ new blog, “Loud and Queer.” The blog was created this month and aims to give students an outlet to speak out about any current issues, such as LBGT rights, and inspire discussion among student readers about these topics, Rudnicki said.

Sociology senior Ian Morrison, another blogger on “Loud and Queer,” said he is interested in the political side of the LBGT movement.

“I felt like this is a perfect opportunity to use what I learned in reading and classes and apply it to some of the stuff you see in the news,” he said.

Morrison said in his blog posts, he takes a look at critical issues in the LBGT community to see if he agrees with the outcomes.

“Often with the movement, it’s difficult to hear anyone but the people who are prominent — the big names — and blogging gives us the opportunity as students to give our perspectives,” he said.

Robert LaRose, a professor in the Department of Telecommunication, Information Studies and Media, said to establish a large blog following, writers should address a controversial topic and provide something that adds to conversation about that subject.

“If I were doing it, I would try and link up issues that are of interest to that community to other issues such as racism and draw connections, then publicize it,” he said.

MSU alumna Lauren Beach said she found “Loud and Queer” through Facebook, and she’s excited to see students investing time into a project worthwhile.

“I identify as bisexual, and I appreciate there are bisexual and transgender voices on there,” Beach said.

By promoting a positive environment, Rudnicki said she hopes “Loud and Queer” will develop a large student following.

“I feel like there’s so much bad press out there, so a lot of people are concentrating on what is negative about situations,” she said. “I hope that people see it as a supportive network of people that just care.”
