Lansing — Lansing’s entertainment district is set to be expanded to attract Michigan residents, once a new casino is built to draw visitors to the downtown area and raise revenue for local scholarships.
Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero gave a press conference Monday morning in the Lansing Center to announce the Kewadin Lansing Casino, a $245 million investment slated to create more than 2,200 jobs.
The city of Lansing and the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians will partner on the casino’s development to raise funds for services to both the city of Lansing and the Sault Tribe.
About $6 million of the casino’s estimated $250 million annual revenue will go toward creating a Lansing Promise scholarship program — similar to the Kalamazoo Promise — that will provide full funding for students who graduate from the Lansing school district and continue to a public college or university in the state.
Construction on the casino, which will be located at Michigan Ave. and Cedar Street, will begin after development agreements are approved by the Lansing City Council and the Sault Tribe’s board of directors. After breaking ground, construction is expected to take 14-18 months.
