ASMSU officer resigns citing conflicting schedules

January 26, 2012

Editor’s note: This story has been changed to accurately reflect the current status of funding for ASMSU funded events and programs.

ASMSU Vice Chairperson for Student Programming Emmanuel Williams has resigned from his post in the organization because of overwork and conflicting schedules, ASMSU General Assembly Steve Marino announced at the group’s Thursday night meeting.

An interim vice chairperson will be appointed for two weeks until an election can be held to determine a replacement, Marino said.

Marino said Williams was feeling “overrun” with his duties as a resident mentor and ASMSU officer, among other activities in which he was involved.

Williams could not be reached for comment Thursday night.

Marino said Williams is eligible to run for an officer position in the April elections, but his chances might be tarnished after resigning.

Williams’ resignation comes at a tumultuous time for the programming board. The programming board, which oversees ASMSU funded events and programs, lost two members of its board of directors, leaving the board under quorum and unable to move forward on events. A bill also was a passed during the meeting to allow for funding to continue in an interim situation through the Finance Committee.

Also during the meeting, representatives passed a bill to monitor unsanitary practices in the MSU dining facilities. Representative Kyle Clifton asked the assembly to set up meetings with dining services representatives to discuss cafeteria inspection infractions in residence hall dining facilities.

Clifton cited instances of cafeteria workers not properly cleaning utensils or not changing their gloves and said the issues need to be addressed.

The assembly also passed a bill by consent to partner with Teach for America for the Now More Than Ever rally for educational equality Saturday afternoon. The rally will begin at 1:30 at Beaumont Tower before moving to Wells Hall to hear from a number of guest speakers.
