Led by five players scoring in double figures, the MSU men’s basketball team beat Nebraska-Omaha 110-68 on Sunday at Breslin Center.

After Nebraska-Omaha’s CJ Carter hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring, MSU reeled off the next 10 points, led by an early six from senior guard Brandon Wood.

The Spartans continued to pour it on early, opening a 22-5 lead in the game’s first eight minutes.

There was a small scare for Spartan fans a little less than midway through the first half when senior forward Draymond Green went down grabbing at his left knee. However, after being helped off the floor, Green returned shortly after with a wrap on his knee and promptly knocked down a 3-pointer to give MSU a 25-7 lead with 10:56 left in the half.

MSU shot 24-for 38 (63.2 percent) in the half and was led by sophomore guard Keith Appling, who scored 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out four assists, all without missing a shot.

The Spartans also held control of the boards, outrebounding the Mavericks 32-9.

In the second half, it was more of the same for MSU, as the Spartans built their lead to as much as 49.

Nebraska-Omaha did pick up its offense in the second half, connecting on nine 3-pointers. But the Spartans, who finished the game with a 54-16 rebounding margin, proved to be too much for the Mavericks.

Green led all scorers with 23 points. The senior forward also recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 10 rebounds. Wood recorded his MSU career-high with 20 points while adding six rebounds and four assists. Appling, who finished the game with just one miss, scored 13 points and was one rebound and three assists shy of a triple-double.

Junior center Derrick Nix and sophomore center Adreian Payne each added 10 points. As a team, MSU shot 41-for-75 (61.3 percent) from the field, 8-for-16 (50 percent) from deep and 10-for-11 (90.9 percent) from the free throw line.
