Emergency Alert System to be tested today

November 9, 2011

At 2 p.m. today, there will be a 30-second test of the Emergency Alert System on radio and television stations across the country. The message will begin with “This is a test.”

This is the first ever nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System, or EAS, which is a national warning system that allows the president to address the public in times of emergency or natural disaster.

Michigan regularly holds EAS tests in partnership with television and radio stations throughout the state.

The alert will be sounded on standard broadcast, satellite television and radio stations as well as cable televisions and wireline video services providers across all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and American Samoa.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, and the Federal Communications Commission, or FCC, are organizing the test in conjunction with state broadcasting agencies, such as the Michigan Association of Broadcasters.
