Barnes & Noble evacuated for suspected gas leak

November 9, 2011

A Barnes & Noble manager confirmed the City Center building was temporarily evacuated at about 11:50 a.m. Tuesday because of a suspected gas leak.

The manager said a gas pipe in the alley behind the 300 block of East Grand River Avenue was knocked ajar by a delivery truck a day or two before the reported leak.

East Lansing Police Capt. Kim Johnson said the East Lansing Police Department was not contacted about the incident.

Johnson said East Lansing Fire officials responded for an odor investigation, but Consumers Energy already was handling the incident.

The manager said the building only was evacuated for about 10 minutes while the leak was repaired.
