For some students, such as plant and soil sciences junior Maddie Hale, living on a farm isn’t out of the ordinary.
Before coming to MSU, Hale grew up on her family’s sheep farm in Sandusky, Mich., where she learned how to raise farm animals.
Flock of love
“I haven’t not experienced living on farm,” Hale said.
Hale, who lives at the Sheep Teaching and Research Center, is one of several students who live across the south campus farms. The students get a free place to live in exchange for their work.
“(People) ask me, ‘You live in a barn?’” Hale said. “Once they figure it out, they think it’s kind of cool.”
Although most students get to wake up in the dorms and walk to the cafeteria for breakfast, Hale must attend to chores in the brisk morning air.
“It’s really different than living in the dorms,” she said “I like it.”
