Take action against discrimination

In East Lansing, it is illegal for a landlord to refuse to rent to you or for an employer to refuse to hire you simply because you are a student. It also is illegal for you to be fired or for you to be refused public accommodations solely because you are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered. None of these groups are protected from discrimination under state or federal law, but they are protected from discrimination here in East Lansing.

If you or someone you know is discriminated against, visit the city’s website, cityofeastlansing.com, and follow the directions listed under Civil Rights Complaints. You may also call City Hall at (517) 337-1731. For more information on civil rights protections in East Lansing and how to become involved, see the Human Relations Commission and Fair Housing pages on the website.

I urge each of you to stand up and speak out strongly against discrimination!

William Sawyer-Todd, chair of East Lansing’s Human Relations Commission
