One of the two men accused of breaking into Hubbard Hall dorm rooms and stealing laptops was bound over to Ingham County’s 30th Judicial Circuit Court on Tuesday following his pretrial conference in East Lansing’s 54-B District Court.
Leroy Lamar Whitt, an 19-year-old Detroit resident, and his attorney Trevor Robinson decided to continue their defense in circuit court, and waived Whitt’s right to a preliminary examination.
Whitt was arrested Sept. 18 along with 26-year-old Orrville, Ala., resident Jonathan O’Brien Hatcher after supply chain management freshman Stella Hua called MSU police and reported two men entered her room and took her laptop, iPad and iPod. Several other students in the hall reported thefts from their dorm rooms the same day.
Whitt and Hatcher both are charged with five counts of home invasion. Hatcher also was charged with one count of weapons possession.
Robinson could not comment on Hatcher’s status because he is being represented by a different attorney. Robinson said he expects more evidence will come to light in the coming weeks that will be important to his clients’ defense.
“There’s a lot of information that hasn’t been brought to the public’s attention that will have an impact on the outcome of this case,” he said.
