Student accidently lights trash on fire

July 6, 2011

A 27-year-old male student accidentally lit trash on fire at 3:45 p.m. June 24 in the Chemistry Building, MSU police Sgt. Paul Kuchek said.

Alarms went off, and smoke filled the hallways, Kuchek said.

Several pieces of paper towel caught on fire in Room 320, but when police and East Lansing firefighters arrived, the fire was extinguished.

The student had been doing a demonstration for a YMCA class and threw away pieces of paper towel with zinc on them.

The zinc caught on fire after it made contact with water in the trash can.

There was no damage and no injuries.

The fire was determined accidental, and the case no longer is under investigation.
