Former Spartan pitches well, records loss in return to Lansing

July 24, 2011

Former MSU pitcher A.J. Achter returned to Lansing Saturday night when he pitched for the Beloit Snappers against the Lansing Lugnuts at Cooley Law School Stadium. Achter took the loss as the Lugnuts defeated Beloit, 3-1.

Achter moves to 3-3 for the Snappers, and he maintains a 4.47 ERA for 11 games this season after allowing two runs on three hits in six innings of work Saturday.

He was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 46th round of the 2010 MLB Draft — opting not to play for MSU for his senior season — and has since been playing for Beloit, the Twins’ Class A minor league team.

For his final season with the Spartans in 2010, Achter led his team with 74 strikeouts for the season, ranking him fourth in the Big Ten. As MSU’s top starter, he also led the starting pitchers with a 4.20 ERA for 14 starts.
