Student treated after chemical burn

June 22, 2011

A 25-year-old female student received medical treatment from Olin Health Center after spilling chemicals on herself at about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Chemistry Building, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

The class was working with sodium ethanol, and the student spilled several drops of the substance on her right leg, McGlothian-Taylor said.

The chemical caused a small burn above her knee.

The student fainted after the incident and East Lansing EMTs were called to the scene.

She did not feel any pain and refused medical treatment by EMTs, but was transported to Olin Health Center.

The liquid did not spill anywhere else.

The MSU Office of Radiation, Chemical & Biological Safety is investigating the incident.
