May 15, 2011

MSU baseball senior outfielder Brandon Eckerle was named the male Michigan College Athlete of the Year at the Detroit Athletic Club National Athletic Awards on May 9 in Detroit. The award is given to a student-athlete who performs well athletically and academically, demonstrates strong sportsmanship and leadership qualities and is involved with community service.

Leading the Big Ten, Eckerle holds a .387 batting average and has 87 hits on the season. He also maintains a 3.98 grade-point average.

“Brandon’s an impressive kid,” head coach Jake Boss Jr. said in a release from the MSU Athletics Department. “He’s really a joy to coach.

“It’s good to see him get rewarded for all of his efforts. He deserves all of the honors and accolades he’s gotten up to this point and that he will get in the future.”

In the Spartans’ weekend series against Indiana, Eckerle broke MSU’s all-time hits record, finishing the weekend with 249 hits.
