Group organizes to recall Snyder

April 19, 2011

A relatively young Michigan political group is looking to recall Gov. Rick Snyder from office, citing the freshman governor’s deep-cutting budget proposals and controversial legislation in recent months.

The group, Michigan Citizens United, will circulate petitions in the coming months in an effort to get the recall up for a statewide vote later this year during election season.

Group spokesman Tim Kramer argued Snyder’s budget proposals put corporations ahead of citizens. The governor’s proposed cuts include slashing university appropriations by tens of millions of dollars and taxing pensions for a portion of the senior population.

Kramer also cited a bill recently signed into law that allows the state to appoint emergency financial managers to assist what the governor deems to be financially insolvent communities.

Controversial provisions contained in the legislation include the ability to abolish local units of government.

“That’s basically getting rid of democracy,” Kramer said.

A spokesperson for Snyder did not return a call seeking comment on the movement Tuesday, though Snyder spokeswoman Sara Wurfel told The Detroit News the governor is “committed to making the tough fiscal and policy decisions that have been put off far too long.”
