The MSU men’s tennis team defeated both IUPUI, 7-0, and Wright State, 6-1, on Saturday when it opened its dual season at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
The team began its morning playing IUPUI in doubles. Three consecutive victories were earned. Seniors John Stratton and Austin Brooks defeated their opponents, 8-1, while senior Clark Richardson and freshman Drew Lied won with a score of 8-3. Juniors Denis Bogatov and Mat Nelson earned an 8-6 victory.
Singles play brought six Spartan victories. Freshman Aaron Pfister defeated his opponent, earning a score of 6-3, 6-3, while fellow freshman Ryan Richmond earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Both senior Jason Norville and junior Ronnie Hulewicz won with scores of 6-0, 6-1. In two of the day’s closest matches, Brooks earned a victory with scores of 6-0, 4-6 (15-13), while sophomore Christian Roehmer won with a score of 6-7 (0), 6-3 (10-1).
In the second part of the doubleheader, the Spartans faced Wright State.
The MSU team took all three doubles matches and five of six singles matches.
Hulewicz and Bogatov earned a 8-7 (4) victory, Pfister and Norville won with a score of 8-2 and Roehmer and Brooks emerged victorious with a score of 8-3.
The Spartans only loss came when Richardson lost 7-6 (3), 6-4.
Singles victories were earned by Bogatov with a score of 6-2, 6-3, Richmond with a score of 3-6, 6-3 (1), Stratton with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) and Lied and Nelson, both with scores of 6-4, 6-2.
The Spartans will host Cleveland State and Youngstown State on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the season’s second doubleheader.
