Teresa Szymanski was named Lansing’s next chief of police Tuesday by Mayor Virg Bernero, according to a press release from the mayor.
Szymanski, who had been serving as interim chief since March 2010, has worked at the Lansing Police Department for 23 years.
Szymanski graduated from Ferris State University in 1984 with a bachelor of science in criminal justice.
While serving as interim chief, Szymanski reorganized the department into the Uniform Division and the Investigations Division and adopted 12-hour patrol shifts, thus increasing the amount of officers on patrol at a given time.
