Residents invited to home parade

June 2, 2010

Residents looking for new ideas for home remodeling will be welcomed at the 53rd annual Parade of Homes, which begins Thursday and runs until June 13. The event is hosted by The Greater Lansing Home Builders & Remodelers Association, or GLHBA.

Builders and remodelers will showcase work in 29 homes throughout mid-Michigan.

Although the economy has put a dent in the industry, local officials say it’s making a comeback.

“It’s a unique, exciting moment in the homebuilding and remodeling industry,” GLHBA CEO Doug Carr said in a press release. “The 2010 Parade of Homes will showcase both new homes and remodeled projects in the Greater Lansing area.”

Permits and home starts are up 300 percent from last year’s first quarter, Carr said in the release.

“(It) means our industry touched bottom and business is starting to pick back up,” he said. “The state of the homebuilding and remodeling industry is improving, we are entering a period of recovery, customer interest is up and interest rates for homeowners are low.”

The annual event allows homeowners to tour new constructions built by the area’s best builders.

Homes at various sizes, prices and styles will be presented along the tour and will highlight new design, construction and decorating techniques.

The builders will be present at the houses during the parade.

Interested attendees can visit the GLHBA website at glhba.org for virtual tours, map and details.

Hours the homes are open are 1-6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and 6-9 p.m. on weeknights.

Admission is $5 for children under 12 and $10 for adults. Family passes, which cover two adults and up to four children, can be purchased for $25.
