Delta festival provides family fun

June 27, 2010

The Delta Rocks! Family Festival took place over the weekend at Sharp Park, in Lansing. The festival showcased a petting zoo for the participants, featuring llamas, ponies, ducks, pigs and many more animals.

Lansing resident Lori James gave her 9-year-old son, Daniel, his first $10 to spend but said he could only have it if he spent it wisely.

Walking around the booths, activities and attractions Saturday afternoon at the Delta Rocks! Family Festival, at Sharp Park, 1401 Elmwood Road, in Lansing, Daniel James did a scan of everything before he chose what to buy.

Minutes later, he returned with french fries and a plan, Lori James said.
“He decided it would be cheaper to just get the chili without the cheese so he could have more money to get cotton candy,” she said.

The annual festival was held Saturday afternoon from noon to 6 p.m. and showcased dozens of free, family-friendly activities, including a petting zoo, games, face painting, a business expo, concessions and pony rides.

The number of activities and features the festival has is outstanding, said Barbara Kellogg, recreation coordinator for Delta Township’s Parks, Recreation and Cemeteries Department.

“Our goal is to provide entertainment for the whole family,” Kellogg said.

Marcella Barncard, a Lansing Community College student and volunteer at the festival, attended the event with her family when she was younger. Now, she participates in the festival each year as a volunteer.

“I’ve actually volunteered for the past three or four years,” Barncard said. “It’s just something to do to give back to the community. My grandparents took me here when I was a kid, so I just wanted to stay a part of it.”

Barncard recommends the festival to all families, where the attractions have something for everyone, she said.

“It’s for all ages,” Barncard said. “It meets the adults, but also young children all the way to teenagers.”

The James’ return annually to the festival as a family and consider it a learning experience for their son Lori James said.

“We just have conversations with people we don’t even know,” she said. “It’s really great to meet other people that you have no connection with, (we’re) getting social skills for (Daniel).”

Seeing her son grow with the festival in more ways than one is something Lori James looks forward to every year, she said.

“It’s great to have this activity, especially it being free,” she said.
“Watching him have a good time, that’s (my favorite part).”
