Rowing team advances three boats to Saturday semifinals

May 29, 2010

In the first day of competition at the 2010 NCAA Championship regatta Friday in Sacramento, Calif., the MSU rowing team advanced all three of its boats to the semifinals, which start at 9:00 a.m. Saturday.

The Spartans’ varsity eight easily made it to Saturday’s semifinal, when it finished behind California and USC but beat Washington and Washington State.

MSU’s second varsity and varsity four boats had a tougher go of things, but still managed to survive to race Saturday.

After making its way into third place during the morning, the second varsity fell to fifth and out of a qualifying position. In a strong afternoon session, though, the second varsity finished in second, which was good enough to advance.

Narrowly missing out on third place and an automatic bid in the morning, the varsity four also responded well in the afternoon and finished third in its second race of the day.

Following the varsity eight races at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, the second varsity and varsity four will begin at 9:30 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. respectively.
