Man taken off Lansing flight

February 15, 2010

A man who was escorted off a Detroit-bound flight from Lansing was released Monday with no charges, an FBI official said.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was detained after he allegedly tried to escape the plane while it was on the runway at Lansing’s Capital Region International Airport.

FBI spokeswoman Sandra Berchtold said the man was interviewed and released, and no charges were filed at the time.

Joe Williams, spokesman for Pinnacle Airlines Corp., which operated the flight, said the plane was supposed to take off at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

There were six passengers on board and three crew members.

The company operates flights as a Delta Air Lines connector flight.

After a 45-minute weather delay, the plane began taxiing at about 6:15 p.m.

While the plane was still on the runway, the passenger became “agitated” and attempted to exit the aircraft through the passenger door, Williams said.

The flight returned to the gate and the airport police detained the man, Williams said.

Williams said he did not know what caused the passenger to become agitated, but said the passenger might have been upset because of the delayed flight.

“It did not appear that it was any sort of violent restraint or anything like that,” he said.

The flight was headed to Detroit and landed at about 9:17 p.m. No one was injured during the incident.
