Leggett pleads guilty to assault charges

Former MSU running back Ashton Leggett pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and battery Thursday, becoming the first player involved in a November fight to settle his criminal case.

Ingham County prosecutors dropped one count of conspiracy to commit assault and battery against Leggett as part of the plea agreement. The assault and
battery charges carry a maximum of 93 days in jail. He is due to appear in court again on Feb. 19.

The charges stem from a Nov. 22 fight in Rather Hall, where nine MSU football players allegedly assaulted members of the Iota Phi Theta fraternity, according to witnesses. Eight other former or current MSU football players face assault charges related to the fight and are awaiting pre-trial hearings.

Leggett’s guilty plea also could be removed from his record as part of the plea bargain.

“There are no terms yet (to the agreement),” said Hugh Clarke Jr., Leggett’s attorney.

“He would be on probation if granted, subject to whatever terms and conditions (are specified by prosecutor Stuart Dunnings), and if he successfully completes those terms and conditions, then he doesn’t have a criminal record.”

Pre-trial conferences originally scheduled for Thursday were moved to a later date in February for eight other MSU players — former junior safety Roderick Jenrette, former sophomore running back Glenn Winston, sophomore wide receiver Fred Smith, sophomore wide receiver B.J. Cunningham, junior wide receiver Mark Dell, redshirt freshman linebacker Jamiihr Williams, junior offensive lineman J’Michael Deane and junior cornerback Chris L. Rucker.

Dunnings said prosecutors are working toward plea bargains with other players charged but declined to specify what terms of punishment would be sought.

Three MSU players, including Leggett, are transferring to different schools, head coach Mark Dantonio said Wednesday. Leggett will transfer to Illinois State University, redshirt freshman defensive end Jamiihr Williams will transfer to Northeast Mississippi Community College and redshirt freshman linebacker Brynden Trawick will transfer to an unknown school, Dantonio said.

He added that sophomore defensive tackle Ishmyl Johnson is no longer on the team, but did not specify why.

The other eight players charged for the altercation have been allowed back into the MSU football facilities, Dantonio said.

Neither Johnson nor Trawick have been charged in connection with the Rather Hall incident.
